Maybe in June

This week’s writing challenge is hosted by Vincent Mars, who challenges us to write a story of only 50 words in length. Weeks ago I might have thought this impossible, but Friday Fictioneers has helped me tremendously in cutting out excess words. I’ve never posted poetry here before, so I thought I’d take this opportunity. I’m sure what I’ve written violates all the rules of poetry, but I’m not aiming to become a professional in any sense. I’ve mostly posted fiction so far, but today I decided to express some feelings that have been bouncing around in my heart for some time.

I imagined years from now, we’d still be living the magic of life.

Waking with smiles, kissing in the rain, and dancing in candlelight.

Already jaded, the music’s gone, though I still listen for a tune.

You don’t seem to notice, or even care, but maybe you will in June.

Thanks for reading,

Adelie

  1. That’s great – I love the bittersweet feeling to this and that last line made me smile. Magic has a way of sneaking up on us as long as we keep looking for it and hoping.

  6. A sparkling gem! Love the third line especially, as that’s when the poem turns on a dime (or should I say a fifty cent piece!) Great work – – this is super hard to do! You don’t see me doing this. But I’ve kicked myself fifty times now. ‘-)

    • Thank you so very much for reading and for commenting. Honestly, June is the month of my wedding anniversary. So, the poem really came out of feelings I’ve been holding in for quite some time. Also, June tends to be the beginning of the beautiful weather (in Michigan, at least), so I thought it would make a general connection with changing seasons as well. I really appreciate your curiosity and thoughtful comment!

  10. Hi Adelie! I enjoy the beauty in your work. The third line is my fave it has so much drama. Agree with Scentofrina, there is a real fascination here of June. I’m linking it to seasons and optimism of a Summer. Well done!

    • Well hello, Lita! I’m touched that you read my poem and left such a lovely comment. I love your expansion on the symbolism of June, and you hit it spot on! Additional significance of June is that it’s my wedding anniversary. These feelings have been nearly bursting at the seams of my heart for a while, so finally getting them out there has been a relief. I never expected people might actually enjoy reading it, so that’s great too! Thanks, again!

    • Thank you so much for reading and for the wonderful comment. Poetry definitely isn’t my forte, but I’m definitely in the process of sharpening the skill (or at least trying to)! I try to find a balance between making my writing personal but also leaving parts of it open for interpretation. ! greatly appreciate the positive feedback 😀
